In October 2022, the State of New Jersey filed a consumer fraud and cost recovery lawsuit against five major oil and gas corporations — ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, and ConocoPhillips — as well as the the American Petroleum Institute, to hold them accountable for the damage caused by their climate deception. Municipal Legal Action
In September 2020, the City of Hoboken became the first municipality in the state to file a consumer fraud and cost recovery lawsuit against ExxonMobil, the American Petroleum Institute, and other fossil fuel companies. for the increasing costs of climate disasters to property, public health and the people of New Jersey. The case seeks to hold the polluters accountable for their climate deception and make them pay for related climate damages. Learn more here.
